WOODWEEK.COM – This week we have for you the market update from TPT Forests. News from the Chinese market is cautious to muted, mainly due to expectations for lower annual growth in their wider Chinese economy. With plenty of logs still heading to China from the northwest USA there are still high volumes of wood going into the market from a range of suppliers. The report covers other markets as well.

In other news, employment law changes being planned by the government are likely to have little impact on forestry businesses. A much bigger impact is likely to come from the implementation of recommendations from the Health and Safety Taskforce Report. If you did not fully digest the signals sent by the Taskforce as reported in last week’s issue – we thought it was important enough to draw your attention to it again this week. Consider it compulsory reading homework for today-tonight-tomorrow, especially the 3-page summary of its key findings in the executive summary report.

Speaking of attention – we’d like to draw contractors and forest managers attention… They should be registering their crew foremen and forest supervisors NOW to attend the FICA Safety Communications Workshop coming up in Nelson in late June. See details in this issue. Due to preparations necessary to attend this workshop, registrations will be closing in the first week of June – so NOW really is the time to act. Forest contractor attendance at this workshop gains certification points for your company. More details on that in coming weeks.

Finally, we have several reminders of upcoming events for you in today’s news as well as from across the political and regional spectrum. From Tasmania’s evolving action on the newly signed forest deal – to NZ First’s late and limp commentary on forestland purchases by the Chinese government. It seems more of a statement to remind the general public that they are still warming their seats in parliament rather than being of any great impact. Either way – we hope this brings you right up to date and thanks for your continued loyalty as readers.
